New Year, Step out of your Comfort Zone

By Amanda Cohen on January 3, 2018

It’s that time of year again… all of that “new year, new me” B.S. Even though each and every year people make these New Year’s resolutions that they fail to keep, there are some exciting New Year’s activities to keep 2018. In the past, I used to make these unrealistic New Year’s resolutions that I never kept and I would give up and then remind myself of it the following year when I once again didn’t accomplish my unrealistic resolution. So, I decided to change it up and have the same New Year’s resolution: to go outside of my comfort zone. The beauty of this resolution is that it can be accomplished more than once (it can be accomplished each and every day)! Take it from me (a person who is an introvert and is scared of most things in life) this resolution is the best thing I have ever done for myself (well, except for eating that extra slice of pizza). Here is a list of fun and exciting activities to push you out of your comfort zone in 2018!

Get Scuba Certified

Getting scuba certified is not as hard as you think and it’s so fun (I just finished my certification two days ago). The confined water dives and the online exams are easy to do and extremely affordable! When I finished my last open water dive to complete my certification, I saw sharks, sea turtles, and stingrays and it was the most surreal experience of my entire life. It was definitely terrifying, but I am so happy that I did it because I was not only able to breathe underwater, but experiencing life underwater with all of the animals was incredible.

Train for a Half Marathon/Marathon

Getting into the swing of working out can be tough for anyone, especially if you have an extremely busy college schedule. However, working towards a solid goal is a great workout motivator. There are thousands of different training apps that are easy to follow, plus this is a fun activity to pursue with your friends! If you aren’t feeling up for a full marathon, a half marathon or a 10k is a great way to start your fitness journey! Focus on having fun and think about all of the positive health benefits that you will be gaining from this experience.

Join a Dating App

I know this sounds crazy, but joining a dating app is a huge step out of your comfort zone, especially for us introverts. A great dating app is Bumble because girls have the power to decide who they want to connect with and who they don’t want to connect with (it’s a great app for those of us who get nervous using apps like Tinder). You may never swipe right on someone, but it’s a huge step just creating a profile and putting yourself out there. Even if you aren’t looking for something romantic, you can use apps like Bumble just to make a new friend… it’s time to bring back casual dating that does not have the end goal of sex.

Get Set up on a Blind Date

If dating apps aren’t for you, have your friends set you up on a blind date. Blind dates are not obsolete and they are a huge step outside of anyone’s comfort zone because you have no idea what you are getting yourself into. It is sometimes scary to put all of your trust in another person (especially your friend who just wants you to have a good time), so definitely keep your guard up but most importantly have fun because it’s not like this date has to end in marriage, it can just be for a good time!

Take a Class you know Nothing About

More often than not, college students are either looking for classes to fill their majors or they are looking for buffer classes to soften the blow of a difficult semester. Well, why not spice it up and try something new. Look into classes that are extremely specific and classes in which the subject material is more obscure or abstract. These classes are extremely useful and, even if they are hard, will be tons of fun! If you’re nervous about it, try to find a friend to take this class with you!

Going outside of your comfort zone can range from something big like skydiving to something small like taking a class you know nothing about. This is the reason why it makes such an amazing New Year’s resolution, because the possibilities are truly endless. If these bigger goals are too nerve-wracking for you, no problem! You can start smaller than this. For example, order something new off of the menu of your favorite restaurant, or say hi to someone in your class that you’ve never talked to! Happy Holidays and good luck with the resolutions, ladies and gentlemen!
